Whittier is similar in visual character to the Wedge, although it is architecturally more distinguished, especially around Fair Oaks Park. Above its Lake Street-to-29th Street commercial-light industrial corridor, Whittier offers three distinct environments: predominantly houses west of Blaisdell; a

commercial strip along Nicollet, now filled with a remarkable variety of ethnic restaurants; and an imposing institutional district to the east, centered around the Art Institute.

Whittier History

Like the Wedge and many other neighborhoods, Whittier experienced cyclical decline after the war, though instead of attracting a counter culture, Whittier became known as a party neighborhood for young adults not quite ready to settle down. That seems less the case today, or at least less obvious, although the profile of 18-to-24-year-olds continues to be higher than the citywide

average.

In addition to several architecturally important buildings, the significant neighborhood cultural landmarks are the expanded Art Institute, which has appreciably strengthened its collection over the past two decades, and the venerable Black Forest restaurant at 26th and Nicollet.
