The Carlyle

THE CARLYLE 100 Third Avenue S. Located near the Third Avenue bridgehead, The Carlyle is on the fringe of Mill District residential development, as well as on the fringe of the downtown central business district. It is traditional in character, but not harking back to historic industrial structures, like its nearby contemporaries. Rather, this is a knowing reference to 1920s skyscrapers in Chicago and New York, like the landmark, 1924 American Radiator Building overlooking Bryant Park in Manhattan. To emphasize the allusion, the top is dramatically lighted, as was de rigueur for important Jazz Age skyscrapers. Although this is a very modern building, direct references to prewar architecture continue inside, with a general richness of palette and carefully devised unit plans that remind one of upper-crust apartments in Chicago and New York. Naturally, The Carlyle's amenities are much-enhanced beyond the pre-Second World War norm in major American cites, including an outdoor pool terrace and adjacent fitness facility, and a Great Room for social events.
