The Commodore

79 Western Ave N, St. Paul, 55102

COMMODOR 79 Western Avenue Most of St. Paul's most engaging social legends eventually converge on this venerable hotel, now converted to condominiums on the upper floors. The list of transient- and long-term residents—from national literary figures Sinclair Lewis and Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, to mobsters like Al Capone—suggests that St. Paul (or at least this part of St. Paul) was something of an American Idol in the 1920s. Today, residents and patrons seem to have pretty much avoided the notoriety that would almost have been expected in earlier times, and the Commodor is attractive for its Art Deco bar and dining room, operated by the University Club. Still, the Commodor remains a place to see and be seen in St. Paul.
