U FLATS 2600 University Avenue SE A couple of generations ago, students could avail themselves to university dorms or the quaintly named "married students' housing," fraternity and sorority houses, and converted rooming houses, plus a few spartan apartment buildings. That has all changed in the past two decades, as both colleges and especially private developers have built student housing that would have awed students up through the postwar era. U Flats is among these, not the fanciest, perhaps, but the whole notion of students (their parents, really) buying a condo for their school years is both amazing to those who are sufficiently distanced from their own college experience, and also may make financial sense depending on the family's financial situation. U Flats offers studios and one-bedrooms that are convenient to both "U" campuses, and on bus lines to both downtowns. Though of course, students with their own condo probably own their own car as well, and fortunately, street-freeway access is also excellent.
