East Minneapolis Real Estate
The east side of the Mississippi River has always been atypical, compared to the rest of Minneapolis. This was the original, 1850s European settlement, St. Anthony, which was absorbed by a better-organized Minneapolis in the early 1870s. The growing University (established in 1851, the campus had expanded to a substantial 25 acres by the mid-1870s) ensured that the east side would differ from the rest of the city in numerous respects, trivial and significant. As one example, in the 1920s, the city council was made up of three political blocks: north-side Democrats, south-side Republicans, and east-side Socialists. While east-side Minneapolis is by now far-less-idiosyncratic than at times in the past, its neighborhoods retain memorable personalities.
