Eden Prairie Homes For Sale

This second-ring Minneapolis suburb has experienced exponential growth since the 1970s. Between 1880 and 1960, Eden Prairie's population increased almost imperceptibly, from a rural-density 739 souls (about 23 persons for every square mile—now the corresponding figure is almost 2,000) to only 1,880. This represented an average population increase over eight decades of just 14 people per year, the equivalent of two large families. Today's population is estimated at more than 62,000. While the informal civic goal of early-1970s Eden Prairie was to be "the next Edina," that has now evolved into a more-ambitious municipal motto of "Live Work Dream."

Upscale Eden Prairie Takes Shape

As late as the 1960s, a few 1950s subdivisions were scattered across Eden Prairie's 32 square miles—twice Edina's land area, and more than half of Minneapolis'. The major physical features then were the Flying Cloud Airport (opened in1946), and the Flying Red Horse "Pegasus" sign above a gas station in Rowland, a crossroads next to today's Eden Prairie Center (both the airport and the sign still exist). The rest of Eden Prairie was open, beautifully rolling countryside, dotted by several large lakes. A very few businesses lined up along Highway 5, most visibly Char-Lyn, marked by its golf-ball water tower (a tip-off that Eden Prairie residents and businesses were then on their own for water and sewer). To anyone who has not visited Eden Prairie since about 1970, the city is literally unrecognizable—everything seems new, booming, and upscale.
