Eden Prairie has changed dramatically in recent decades – from a largely agricultural community to one with abundant and diverse housing and a variety of industry – thanks in part to construction of the Eden Prairie Center shopping mall, Flying Cloud Airport and Interstate 494. Today, it’s one of the most desirable cities in the Twin Cities, and regularly earns accolades as one of the best spots in the United States to live. Not bad when you consider that much of the development in the city, which covers 32 square miles on the north bank of the Minnesota River, has occurred since the 1960s. As with some other suburbs, Eden Prairie over the years has placed a premium on providing outdoor recreational opportunities for its residents. The city has a number of lakes and ponds within its borders, as well as more than 2,250 acres of parks, 1,300 acres of open space and 70 miles of multi-use trails. In addition to plentiful restaurants, the city also has a vibrant business community and serves as the headquarters for several international companies.
