History of Lake Minnetonka

The native Dakota Indians previously inhabited the area and named it Lake Minnetonka, translated "Big Waters."  Mounds of dirt that can still be seen along the shoreline are actually the ancient burial grounds of the Dakotas.  These mounds are especially evident in the appropriately-named town of Mound.  The now popular Tonka Toys line can trace its roots to an old schoolhouse in the city of Mound.

Much of the shoreline on the lake is privately owner although there are many public access points. Known for excellent fishing and boating, the lake is a popular destination for sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts alike.  Experienced anglers tout Lake Minnetonka as one of the best bass fishing lakes in the Upper Midwest.  The Lake Minnetonka Regional Park is a large, public park offering a separate swimming pond, a fishing pier, a paved hiking and biking trail, a pet trail, a visitor center, and snowmobile access in the winter.  Kids love the multi-level creative play park designed around a nautical theme.

The Noerenberg Memorial Gardens, located in Crystal Bay on the north shore, is an idyllic and tranquil place with walkways and an extensive flower garden.  It is very popular among artists and photographers desiring to capture the color and peaceful beauty of the gardens and surrounding lake waters.

Lake Minnetonka also offers a variety of shops and restaurants.  Overnight guests have their choice of anything from campsites to hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts.  Relax on the beach, ride on a relaxing cruise, ride the trolley through town, enjoy the views on an afternoon drive - the splendor and activities at Lake Minnetonka are virtually endless.
