Marcy-Holmes in Southeast Minneapolis
To those who are interested in Minneapolis history, the serene nineteenth-century neighborhood centered on S.E. 5th Street, east of Central Avenue and (now effectively) west of the 35W freeway, is hallowed as the original Minneapolis, the old town of St. Anthony. Actually, only a handful of these old-fashioned houses was built within a decade of the townsite's settlement—most were constructed a generation or more later, permanently replacing the rude temporary shelters initially built on the east side of the river. But of course from our increasingly distant perspective, these blocks are accepted today as the first houses of the first neighborhood in the city.

In any case, this low-density residential area is only a small part of Marcy-Holmes, a peaceful island, an anachronism. In sharp contrast to the visual cohesiveness of this historic neighborhood, the larger Marcy-Holmes community is comprised of a dynamic, disparate collection of environments and activities: commercial corners, scattered industry, large pockets of student housing, and, at the far eastern side, past the freeway and nestled into the university, the world of its own known as Dinkytown.

Given the community's central location along the riverfront next to the "U" and just across the Mississippi from Downtown, this diverseness is inevitable. Change is constant: something seems always to be happening somewhere in Marcy-Holmes, and always has been. The most visible recent change has been the development, still underway, of hundreds of new housing units along the river, on the university side of Main Place. The largest residential component is to be constructed amidst the historic Pillsbury milling complex; its centerpiece is the Phoenix on the River, an upper-end condominium tower. As a practical matter, all this high-density housing will additionally cut off the "first" neighborhood from the its historic association with the river. But change is also an historical reality for Marcy-Holmes.
