The Popularity of Minneapolis Real Estate

For well more than a century, the Minneapolis real estate market has been popular due to its appealingly scaled, livable neighborhoods. Much of the original real estate in Minneapolis was comprised of single-family homes, though a good number of duplexes and fourplexes were constructed close to streetcar lines into the 1930s. Multi-family housing has generally been developed within specific districts, including historic working man's flats near industrial districts, prewar apartments in vibrant centers like Uptown, or new luxury condominiums in and around Downtown.

Real Estate of Minneapolis: Homes, Lofts & Condos

Minneapolis Homes: Life in Balance
Compared to other large American cities, Minneapolis and its neighborhoods have maintained a strong balance, and are without extremes. Indeed, historian David Gebhard aptly described Minneapolis as a city with "the top and bottom cut off." Residents of Minneapolis homes as a rule are not inclined to show off, so the city's neighborhoods reflect quality rather than glitz. At the other extreme, the Minneapolis real estate market has none of the physical desolation of, say, Houston's fourth ward, thanks in good part to the city's conscientious attitude toward neighborhood revitalization in addition to the city's strong, broadly based local economy.

A Full Spectrum of real estate throughout Minneapolis MN
In a best-of-both-worlds sense, Minneapolis remains to this day characteristically balanced, but is also home to a much greater selection of restaurants, retail, entertainment, culture, and sports than was available just a generation ago. The city is also becoming increasingly cosmopolitan, which is reflected in the remarkable expansion of housing options in the city.

Over the past few years, the Minneapolis real estate market has seen an explosion of niche housing types. In addition to single family homes in Minneapolis, condo and rental multi-family units are also now available and range in price from well under $200,000 to more than $3 million. Minneapolis condos and loft properties are offered in restored historic industrial buildings, renovated conversions of vintage and postwar apartments, as well as in new construction—from townhouses to high-rise buildings.

Properties are available as industrial shells or finished industrial spaces, as well as brand new loft units, conventional apartments, and ultra-luxury boutique condominiums. Most of these housing options were unavailable in the Minneapolis market as recently as two decades ago.

The Minneapolis real estate market has greatly-expanded it's variety of housing, which has moved beyond just single-family houses and duplexes, is now available throughout the city. Buyers can find converted industrial lofts on Stinson Boulevard in the Northeast Minneapolis area or new condos along the Hiawatha LRT line, which is conveniently located near the airport.

Outside the downtown core, new residential developments are typically infill projects which are worked into the existing community fabric, one parcel at a time. In Stevens Square for instance, new housing projects fit perfectly into an existing prewar apartment district. As a striking counterpoint to this norm, along West Lake Street near Dean Parkway, extensive new housing and parallel retail development have changed the visual landscape and revitalized the entire area.
