Minneapolis Prospect Park Condos and Townhomes
Actually, this community in the far southeastern section of the city is made up of a diverse collection of environments, ranging from the University Avenue strip and industrial district to the north, to the handsome housing lining the river on the south. In between are two areas especially dominated by the university—the vast plebian domain of students south of Washington Avenue, from the campus to Luxton Park; and the rarefied if properly funky realm of professors on the hill, as the streets wind ever-upward to the distinctive water tower and park that oversees it all from a splendid eminence.
This last, professors' neighborhood is the most stable, seemingly if not truly unchanged over decades. At the other extreme, the student district just below has seen massive change over the past generation, prominently a number of new private dormitories offering standards of amenity that were unimaginable to the "U" alumni parents of today's students. This new housing mostly accounts for the community's sharp population growth, increasing by one-quarter over the last two decades of the twentieth century.
Of course the university long ago created a bubble around its nearby neighborhoods—no matter what else happens to the regional and national economies, the "U" will still be here. Indeed the university has always been here, predating the State of Minnesota itself. With hundreds of millions of dollars in recent construction on the Prospect Park side of campus, conspicuously the new Alumni Center and football stadium, reinvestment in this area will almost certainly continue into the foreseeable future.
